"No respect for anything except their house and Quidditch, so it seems," Severus flipped to another page in the book, suddenly finding a page adorned in bright blue obscenities. "Ugh!" He quickly cast a cleaning spell and started flipping through the rest of the book, trying to find any other ruined pages. "I can't believe it! Those bloody...." Severus was too mad to speak as he found a whole chapter glued together with dried red paint.

"I can't believe it! How dare they ruin a perfectly good book!" October exclaimed, seeing the damage that had been done to the book. This was appalling behavior, even for Gryffindors. She had heard about Lupin. Couldn't he stop his friends and house-mates from wreaking havoc upon poor, defenseless books?! It just went to show: win a few Quidditch cups and you think you're above everything. "There must be a spare copy somewhere...I'll go see if I can find it." With that, she got up from the table and went back to scanning over the shelves.

Severus shook his head. If the Gryffindors only knew what book this was, he was sure they wouldn't have destroyed it. This book was like a get-out-of-jail free card, or more like a get-out-of-Charms-Class-free card. This held every answer you could possibly need for your Charms homework, and with luck, there would other book like this for each subject. He frowned as the red paint stubbornly stuck to the pages. He had cast the cleaning spell, which should clean paint up quite easily....unless.......Severus shook his head. It couldn't be.....could it?

After several moments of looking, October returned to their table looking dejected. "There don't seem to be any extra copies around." She sighed heavily. Gryffindors. They were supposed to be brave and noble. There was nothing brave or noble about ruining a book. In fact, the average Gryffindor never usually did anything she would consider brave or noble from day to day. Maybe that was just a lie from the Sorting Hat. Maybe Gryffindor was really where they put the malicious students and troublemakers. That seemed extremely likely... "May I see the book for a moment?

"Of course," Severus slid the book across the table. He felt uneasy about that red substance, but why had Madame Pince never noticed it before? She was picky not only on where the books were, whether or not they were on time, or how they were checked out, she was also picky as to what condition her books were in. Especially if they come back from a student looking that way. Madame Pince was sure to go ballistic once she saw what had happened to one of her precious books, and with good reason.

"Thanks." October looked at the index, which had avoided being splattered out by the red paint. The chapter marked 'Ranges' seemed to be also untouched by the malicious Gryffindors' prank. "I think you can still finish your essay, despite the condition of the book. They seemed to have missed the chapter on spell ranges." With that, she handed the book back to Severus.

"Thank goodness," Severus sighed in relief. "Have you finished your essay?" He found what he was looking for and started scribbling down the distances. It wouldn't hurt to have it in centimeters, feet, miles, and cubic kilometers in addition to meters, now would it?

"No, I haven't yet." October murmured quietly, staring absently out a nearby window. It was rather overcast now, although the day had started out relatively clear. She half expected it to start raining. "But I have all my other homework finished. I figured it wouldn't take too long anyway..."

"You were right in thinking that," he said, laughing inside. "It's going to take you less than half an hour to complete it with this. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go see if there are any more books by this author." With that, he glided away. Severus would be back for his bag and books, though.

"All right. I'll still be here, probably." October replied quietly. As he walked away, she picked up her school bag and began rummaging through it. She still needed to check over her DADA homework, she had remembered just now. Pulling out her Defense textbook, October's hand brushed against the silver frame of the portrait she had shown to Severus earlier. Yes, she had put it back in her beg, hadn't she?
Pulling it out, she looked at the two people in the picture. Somehow, she could hardly remember what it was like back then. She couldn't recall what it was like to be that October, the one in the picture. A part of her had died after that whole ordeal with her father. She had not felt truly whole since.
The glass broke very quietly as she threw the portrait to the ground and stomped on it. Just a faint tinkling that was there and gone in a second. October swept the remains, shattered glass, ripped picture, bent frame, underneath the table. Why had she even wanted to remember him in the first place?

((Okay. I'm coming back.))
"I found a Transfiguration, Defense Against the Dark Arts, and Astronomy one," Severus said. The books also looked twice as thick and helpful as the Charms one. He couldn't find a Potions one, which disappointed him greatly. Perhaps he'd have to write it himself. It shouldn't be too hard. "Good thing I don't have homework in those subjects; I'd hate lugging these books back to the dorms."

October nodded lightly, still looking a bit sullen. She swept the remains of the portrait a little farther under the table with her foot. It made another small tinkling sound, but it was hardly noticeable. "I see what you mean. They're very thick and heavy-looking." Books were wonderful things, but some were just terrible to have to carry around.

Severus was careful not to ask October about her long face; it was her business and if she wanted to indulge him, she would. "I couldn't find a Potions one. Maybe he or she's in the process of writing it," he said as he set the books down. "Do you need help with your essay?"
