Hitam saw October come in as well, then glanced over at Severus. "I'll leave now," she whispered. "Good luck, Severus." She put one hand reassuringly on his shoulder for a moment, then headed out the doors.

Seeing that Hitam was leaving and October still looked painfully lonely, he decided he'd have to confront her after all. Walking up to the table, he gestured to across the table, "You mind if I sit there?"

October glanced up from her book and smiled weakly at Severus, "No. Of course not. Go right ahead."

Severus sat down hesitantly. "You were pretty upset yesterday." He looked around until he finally said, "Do you want to talk about it? You don't have to if you don't want to..." Severus' sentence trailed off.

"I'm sorry to have put you through that, Severus." October said, closing her book and setting it gently aside, "I suppose I should probably tell you why I got so upset. That is, if you really want to know..."

"I suppose you should," Severus gazed at her intently, not sure what to expect, although he had an inkling.

October took a moment to gather her thoughts. After successful deciding how to communicate what had happened into words, she picked up her book bag and started rummaging through it, looking for some unknown object. Her face was completely unreadable.
She removed a small portrait in a twisting, silver frame from her bag before setting it back on the floor at her feet. She placed it on the table with a slight air of disgust, as if she had not wanted to touch it in the first place.
The portrait was a simple image, depicting an obviously tall, somewhat pale, somewhat gaunt man with lank, silver hair that just barely grazed his shoulders holding a small girl, perhaps three years old, with long, somewhat scraggly raven hair with streaks of white running through it. The man was dressed in sweeping black robes while the little girl he was holding was wearing a light, lilac dress trimmed with lace. The little girl was laughing and smiling, the joy evident in her large, clear, blue eyes. The man’s smile, however, held something deeper, something secret, something that could destroy the happy lives of his family if it were ever to become known. The pair of them were standing against the background of a lavish garden.
“That would be my father.” October sighed, “And the little girl is me. I was three when that was made. That was two years before he died. Well, not died, really. It was more like murdered by the government. He was executed after spending a few months in Azkaban…”
October put a hand to her forehead, hoping that Severus would not hate her for this. She had only told a few people at Hogwarts about this, and it was only after she was completely sure they would not see her as the spawn of demons after she had told them and that they would keep it a secret. After all, she would probably lose most of the people she had forged a friendship with if they learned she was the child of a Death Eater.

Severus turned his gaze on the portrait of October and her father. Looking back up at her, he said, "Hitam told me something of the sort, that he was arrested at his house. That you saw...you saw it all happen. You and August," he looked back up at October. "Did he use one of the Shield charms when he was....arrested?" Severus asked quietly, not wanting to upset her again, but he was dying to know.

"I'm not sure exactly how Hitam found out, but yes." October nodded, "I got upset because it brought back the memory of the night it happened. He...Well, they wouldn't have gotten him if he hadn't used that charm. He had just gotten home, you see. He used to spend long periods of time away from home and he looked especially tired that night after he walked into the door. It sapped his energy and he was forced to stop using it. The Aurors got him then."
October sighed again, closing her eyes in memory of that horrid night, "One of them had a truth potion on him, I think it was Veritaserum, and they forced him to drink it. My father then began spitting out every single secret he had ever kept from us. Apparently, he had been working for you-know-who, and he had been killing people in the most brutal ways imaginable. It was horrible. He had this insatiable bloodlust that we had never known about. And the worst part is, even after hearing all of this coming from his own mouth, I still wanted to forgive him. I still loved him, despite all the terrible things he had done. I almost jumped up and told the aurors that if they were going to take my father to Azkaban, they had to take me with him."

"No doubt you would've," Severus looked at her sadly. "I'm so sorry, October. That's a tragedy that can't be amended."

"Don't apologize, Severus. It's not as though you could have stopped it from happening. He was going to get caught eventually, anyway, and despite the fact that we cared about my father, he still deserved to rot in Azkaban after wht he had done..." October sighed, "But, they decided on executing him after the first month or two."
She reopened her eyes and gazed intently at her fellow Slytherin, "So, you don't hate me, now that you know I was sired by a murderer?"

"Your parents have nothing to do with the person you are," Severus looked her in the eye. "For being so smart, I would've thought you'd know that by now. So," he nodded his head at her, "Of course I don't hate you. How can I?"

"I know. It's just that some people are so afriad of you-know-who and his followers that they would probably be disgusted by the fact that they knew a Death Eater's child. I didn't think you were one of those people, and that's why I told you, but I just need to be sure..." October replied, shaking her head lightly.

"Then those people need to get a grip on themselves. Just because one's parent may be a Death Eater, doesn't mean that the child will be a Death Eater as well. Especially one who's aspiring to be an Auror," Severus retorted.

October looked a bit alarmed by his sharp retort, "...I didn't mean to offend you, Severus." The fourth year murmured quietly, her alarmed looking fading into one of shame.
