"Really. You think Flitwick is going to assigning a lot of things from this book?" October asked, watching the broom in the picture twirl whimsically about in the hall, sweeping up things here and there as if the place was not already spotless. Was it her, or did all cleaning charms have a certain whimsical nature about them? The object that was enchanted, although inanimate and incapable of emotion, seemed to exude an aura of enjoyment as it carried out its assigned task...

"I've heard things. And he's not assigning things from this book, but it might be wise to keep it handy if we do get another assignment like this one," Severus wrote down his answers and flipped through the other pages. "It also names who the inventor of the charm was, what year it was invented, the pros and cons of the charm, as well as listing several uses for the charm," he was considering just buying a copy of this book for household use when he was allowed to use magic outside of school.

"Hm. It sounds like this could be a very useful book." October replied, scanning over the text printed on the page. "I think my mother might have a copy of this book at home somewhere. It looks somewhat familiar."

"I wouldn't be surprised if she did. It'd be useful for anyone who didn't study Charms hard enough at Hogwarts," Severus stopped at page with a wand emitting a perfume that smelled distinctly like his father's cologne.

"Well, I do remember that she told me Charms was her Achilles' heel while she was at Hogwarts. Otherwise, she was good at most things. It think that carried onto August, seeing as he's no good at Charms either. He hates that with a passion. We're all perfectionists in my family, really." October shrugged lightly. "That includes me, I suppose, though I guess I never really noticed before. I mean, does anybody really like to fail?"

"I know a few who revel in their miseries," mutter Severus, thinking of his father. Ever since his father had lost his initial job, he spent the money he could scrounge up for booze and gambling, and enjoyed every minute of it. His mother and he had started to hide their money in various places in the house, so the rare guest would sometimes find a pound or two stuffed up the spout in the sink, or a handful of coins behind the cereal in the scant pantry.

((Um, wouldn't Severus' family use wizarding money? or English money? Just thought about pointing that out...))
"Well, I can understand how some things can get stuck to a person and leave scars. Yes, I understand that well. Still, a person shouldn't hang on every bad experience that happens to them. Life isn't easy and it isn't fun most of the time, but it's better than just giving up. There's always a chance that things will get better in the future, no matter how horrible and nitemarish they are in the present. But this probably sounds like nonsense, doesn't it? You're supposed to be working on your Charms homework and I'm not really helping by distracting you from it." October shook her head lightly , smiling to herself. "Sorry, Severus."

Severus looked down at the book, smiling to himself inside. "It's alright, October. I think I see where you're coming from, but things like that are easier said than done. Now," Severus flipped a few pages, "do you know what Flitwick's talking about when he asks for the range of the spell? We haven't practiced it yet, so how are we going to figure it out if we can't even cast it?"

October thought a moment. "Well, we haven't preformed it yet, but someone has. I'm sure several people have. It has to be recorded somewhere. Have you tried checking the book over again? They should have it down." She glanced over his shoulder at the book. "Yes. I think it's right...here." She pointed to the second paragraph on the page, specifically at a sentence three lines down. There it was, the exact bit of information Severus happened to be looking for.

"Fifteen......feet...." Severus scribbled it down, frowning at his scroll. He was still five inches short, and he had already included all the information that Professor Flitwick had asked for. "Any other information on that?"

October scanned the paragraph over again. "Well...it says here that the range can be expanded in special cases and to check its companion book, Charms For All Occasions, for more information about it." She said, getting up from her chair and gliding to the shelf from which Severus had pulled the first book. "I'll go look for that book. This is the Charms, section and they're probably by the same author, so it shouldn't be to difficult to find..."

"Look under the last name of Funk," Severus suggested. "Have you started on your essay? It should be easy now that we've found these books." He wondered if the authors specifically made these books for Charms, but the professors never told the students since it would make things too easy.

October nodded, running her index finger along the spines of the books and muttering the name to herself as she scanned the rows of books. This one was proving rather difficult to find. It did not seem to be grouped with the rest of the books by the author. Finally, after a few minutes of searching, she located it near the bottom of the shelf.
"Somebody put it back in the wrong place." October sighed, placing the book down on the table. "Not very considerate of them. I don't have any idea how Madame Pince managed to overlook it. She's usually so picky about these things."

"She probably had some Gryffindor helpers with her," Severus said disdainfully. He noticed that one of the Marauders, Remus Lupin, spent alot of time in here. He didn't just study, Lupin was often seen putting the books up or on Quiet Patrol. If Madame Pince was going to have a helper, it might as well be one that could back the books properly, like Severus, for example.

"Well, no wonder then." October replied with equal disdain, slipping back into her chair. "Gryffindors...they have no respect for books, it seems." They couldn't write in books anymore after Dumbledore made an announcement about how Madame Pince would give dentention to anyone she found writing in library books (but, had dentention ever stopped them before?), so she supposed mixing up the order of books was the only library-related mischief they could make without getting in any real trouble.
Now that October thought about it, Gryffindors had no respect for anything except Quidditch, really.
