"Well, there are all shades of pink, yellow, orange, red and white, as you said, and there are some that are so dark in color they look almost purple." October replied, thinking of all the different colors she had growing. Recently, one had bloomed that was the most beautiful shade of orange red. It looked like someone had tried to paint a sunset on the petals. It had been one of the prettiest one she had grown in a while. "And if one is willing to experiment a bit, you can get completely unnatural colors like blue and silver, although it can be rather hard. Plants are delicate things and they can die if you expose them to the wrong things. I have mostly all of the colors you can get execpt yellow. In my honest opinion, yellow is an annoying color."

Severus was well aquainted with the colour yellow. When his father was too drunk to drive or walk himself home but sober enough to know he couldn't, he always called home for Severus to pick him up. When he arrived, he usually there in time before there had been any mishaps, but sometimes he had to duck under the yellow police tape to retrieve his father when he was running late. Yellow was more of a foreboding than an annoyance, for yellow was both the colour of beer and police tape. "I agree. Have you ever gotten blue or silver or any interesting colour of sorts?"

"Yes. I think I have a few blue ones growing in the greenhouse right now." October replied, smiling a bit with the thought of roses. "Were you at the last Quidditch game? It was Slytherin versus Ravenclaw. I had managed to make one of the roses Slytherin colored. The petals were alternating green and silver. I wore it in my hair. August suggested it. It was really one of his better ideas. He also wanted me to make him some blue and bronze ones for Ravenclaw. I think he wanted to hand them out before the game."

"Is it possible to make the bronze? How do you make them alternate colours? Do you change the colours naturally or do you use magical substances to aid you? Do you have any more of those green and sliver ones? I want to to take a look at them as well as those blue ones. Do you know if they have any magical properties?" Severus gasped for breath. This could be a whole new frontier for potion-making! Magically enhanced plants, or the cultivating of new plants for potion ingredients. The thought gave him shivers of excitement.
((Severus is such a potions-geek.))

((But that's why we love him, right?))
"Alright, alright. Once question at a time please." October replied, a tad bit overwhelmed by Severus' sudden onslaught of questions. "As for how I make them change colors, it's mostly through magical interference. I always start with the seed. Remember the appearance changing potion we learned how to make in third year? Well, I decided to mess with it a bit to see if it could be used on plants. Yes, I do know how stupid and dangerous that was, especially since I'm not good at Potions. But it worked! I watered the seeds with the Potion for a few weeks and it altered the original color of the plant. And that plant would leave seeds that would grow up to be the same color as the parent plant. It infected the whole line then on. All I had to do was water them and care for them and they would grow up to be strange colors. As for the alternating petals, that was very difficult and I still don't know how I managed to do it."

((When you say we, are you referring to you and I?))
"Interesting," Severus pondered this for awhile. "What gave you the idea? Were you aiming for a particular colour? Or did you just want a more personal collection of flowers? Have you tried this with any other plants? Were you able to reproduce the magically enhanced flowers naturally or did they just die?"

(('We' refers to me, and the obsessive legions of fangirls Snape has accumulated, even though he killed Dumbledore. I like Snape, he's an interesting character, but I'm not a fangirl.))
"Well, the flowers do reproduce--Didn't I tell you that?--but they seem to die a bit faster than the ones I haven't magically enhanced." October replied. Severus seemed sincerely interested now. That made her happy. At least her hobbies didn't completely bore him to tears. Anyway, yes, I was trying to get some unusual colors for my roses. Anyone can grow the normal colors, but a blue rose is almost completely unheard of. I like being under the illusion that I'm different from anyone I share a dorm with because of it."

"I can see your point, and yes, you did tell me. Sorry, that bit of information must've slipped my mind," Severus apologized. "Are you working on making the magically enhanced roses live longer? You might want to try an Agoporro potion on those," he said. "In fact, I could make one before dinner if we head back to the castle soon. Then we could go by the Greenroom after dinner, if you want," Severus added hastily. He desperately wanted to see those blue roses and see what properties they had.

October blinked her icy blue eyes. "Uh, sure. That would be nice. I would really like it if my roses lasted longer."

((Ago = live and porro = long, according to an online translator.))
"Alright," Severus picked up the mugs and put them on the counter, making sure to tip Madame Rosmerta. This had been one of his most pleasurable afternoons, and he wanted to make sure she knew it. She seemed to understand and gave Severus a polite nod. "Ready to go?"

"Actually, Severus, I need to go buy a new quill before I go back to the castle. You can go on without me, though." October replied, smiling at him and getting up from the table. "I lent mine to Mimi a day or so ago and she broke it accidentally. Poor child. She's so clumsy. Anyway, I wouldn't want to make you wait while I run my errands. You should go on to the castle. But...I did have a nice time, Severus. I really did. We should do this again sometime."
October hardly had time to think out what she was going to do before her feet started moving. She padded quietly over to Severus and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek. Then October smiled to the boy before turning and quickly leaving the pub.

Severus stood in shock, not quite beleiving what had just happened. A girl had....actually touched him? He felt a deep blush starting to cover his face, but he couldn't control it. He stumbled out of the pub, almost tripping over a barstool in the process. Severus made his way back to the castle in a daze, trying to convince himself that it wasn't a dream. Once he reached the dungeons though, he managed to gather his wits enough to start brewing his potion for October.

Mimi had indeed been spying as October predicted. Having gotten back from her own date with her new boyfriend, Drommel Atchen, she had arrived just in time to catch the last half of her friend's meeting with Severus. She had yanked her friend into the nearest alley as soon as she left.
"Toby...Toby, Toby, Toby..." Mimi sighed, voice somewhere caught between pity and amusement. "You sure got the short end of the stick back there. I didn't hear him compliment you once and he seemed a lot more interested in your roses than he was in you...God, October. I thought he liked you. It all shows just how much Severus cares..." The last two sentences contained a hard edge of sarcasm. Mimi had convinced herself that Severus Snape was a manipulative little slime ball that should not be walking the face of the earth, let alone getting close to her friend. This was all some kind of plot to con October into joining the Death Eaters. All that was left to do was force October to see the light.

October shot a hostile look at Mimi. "I thought we agreed that it was not your place to judge Severus, seeing as you hardly know him." She replied bitterly, brushing past Mimi and walking briskly out of the alley. She really did need to buy a new quill and Mimi was not helping by pulling her into an alley and telling her how Severus honeslty did not seem to be all that interested in her. Still, in the back of her mind, October knew Mimi's words were true. Painfully true. Still, October would not give Mimi the satisfaction of knowing that. After all, they were still fighting, were they not?

Mimi trotted along in October's shadow. "I know what I saw, October." The Hufflepuff girl replied coolly. "It's too easy. Severus needs to learn how to act. Get him off on another subject and you can see right through his cute little guise. We both agree that he honestly seemed to have no interest in you whatsoever as soon as you started telling him about the little experiments you've been conducting on your roses. You really can't deny it, October. Also, I got you something." It was another 'please-talk-to-me-again' present. Mimi really needed October on her side if they were ever going to hope to combat the population of Dark Wizards to be in Hogwarts. And anyway, Mimi liked October. They were very different, but it hardly mattered.
Mimi pulled a purple box out of her robe pocket and attempted to give it to October. Purple was one of October's favorite colors, Mimi knew, along with blue, silver, and green. "It's a replacement quill for the one I broke. This one's special, enchanted not to break as easily as a normal one, and I got it in one of your favorite colors. Come on, October. Just open the box."
