Severus nodded, knowing that if those hooligans came near his Potions materials, he'd jinx them to next Tuesday without hesitation or remorse.
"Yes, I remember that. That was when the Gryffindors hid a boggart in the storage compartment, so we had to leave our baggage on the floor. We practically ended up sitting next to each other, it was so crowded," Severus didn't add that at the time his heart was beating a million miles per minute at the mere thought of a girl actually sitting next to him. However, he hardly saw October during the school year, and his hopes that he might have a friend were shattered. Until now.

"Mhm. Sometimes I wonder if those boys--what do they call themselves, the Mauraders?--will ever grow up. I don't understand how they can think torturing people is fun. The worst of it is, they're practically idol-worshipped in their house. It doesn't make any sense." October sighed, shaking her head. Were Gryffindors really so heartless? Well, not all of them were. Caroline had been very nice to October. Gryffindors couldn't be all bad, but she wouldn't dare say that. Slytherin pride, after all. Being sorted into Gryffindor was an unforgivable sin.

"Of course they're worshipped; they torture Slytherins. Very rarely do they harass other houses," Severus clenched his fists. "As for them growing up, that's as likely as pigs flying," he growled into his Butterbeer.

"Truer words have never been said." October replied. "Still...I find it rather hard to believe that Gryffindors are so blinded by house rivalry that they can't see an act of cruelty for what it is. I read in Hogwarts: A History that Salazar Slytherin and Godric Gryffindor used to be best friends back when the school was founded. I wonder what they would think of us if they saw Hogwarts now, torn all in pieces because of some stupid Quidditch tournament. When you think about it, it seems downright pathetic." October knew at once that she shouldn't have said that. He probably wouldn't agree with her. He might get mad at her for sympathizing with Gryffindors. Still, if October couldn't be honest with Severus about what she thought, then they had no hope of developing any sort of relationship.

"Only Gryffindors care about Quidditch, Slytherins defeat the Gryffindors and get on with their lives. Gryffindors take it personal and decide to make our lives a living heck because we're better at Quidditch than them. I'm sure Salazar and Godric had their differences, you know," Severus said coolly. October had a point there, but someone had to side with the Slytherins.

"Well, of course. Even the closest of friends fight sometimes." October replied, shrugging lightly, "It's only human to." She ignored the painful twinge in the back of her mind as the words brought up images of her recent fight with Mimi about Severus. Mimi was still her friend, despite all their differences. October wondred whether Mimi felt the same way still, even after their fight. October's eyes dropped to Severus' right forearm. What if there was some truth to what Mimi had said? What if Severus really was going to be one of You-Know-Who's followers? No. She told herself. Mimi didn't know Severus. She couldn't say what he would and wouldn't do.
((I have to go now. Goodnight!))

"At times, it seems that the founders were anything but human. They established this school, which has lasted for eons it seems, and their names are still remember today. As well as their reputations," Severus saw October glance at his arm. He always made sure that he never wore short sleeves, no matter how hot it was. Severus remembered what Mimi had said to him, how she seemed to think that Severus was going to hurt her, that it was only a matter of time. He would never dream of hurting his one and only friend, but how could he do so when she was planning to be an Auror? Unless there was a way to un-Mark himself, or redeem himself....
((Same here. G'night.))

"Yes, but they were still all human, no matter what they did, and they were subject to human emotions. It does seem hard to believe, I admit, but that was just how it was." She raised her butterbeer bottle to her lips and took a sip. "We, as humans, have limitations and it seems amazing if any one individual, or in this case, four individuals, can acheive something so great. What most of us don't realize is, we can be just as great as they were, perhaps even greater. People just don't try anymore. If they're not instantly good at something, they give up on it. But I'm one to talk, being guilty of it as well..."

"Right, so don't give up, October. There are plenty of things you excel at, gardening, for one. Don't be so hard on yourself," Severus raised his bottle in salute to her. "I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who excel at something, but the world just doesn't acknowledge their acheivements."

"Oh, Severus. You're too kind." October grinned at him. "I suppose I am rather good at gardening aren't I?" Still, what use is that in the real world? She added mentally, although she wasn't quite sure whether or not Severus would hear. He could be reading her thoughts at the very moment and she wouldn't know. The thought sent a chill up her spine. The thought of anybody, even Severus, whom she trusted and loved, inside her head was not a pleasant idea. The mind was a person's last sanctuary, where they could retreat to to simply escape the world for a time. To have the world breach that sanctuary, to have people other than yourself invading your head, was almost unthinkable. Legilimency was a a useful tool, and doubtless she herself would probably need to learn it to become an auror, but to shamelessly walk into a person's mind was unthinkable, a crime almost.
She wondered faintly waht Severus was thinking right now. Wihout really considering it, she asked. "Severus, what are you thinking about right now, if you don't mind me asking?"

Severus paused for a minute, contemplating how to word his thoughts, or rather, his feelings. "I'm thinking about getting us some new Butterbeers, and how beautiful your roses must be right now, despite the recent cold weather. And you? It's only fair, you know," he said. Where in the world did October get that question from? She was lovely, but she was constantly surprising Severus despite all his attempts to understand her.

"I was wondering what use gardening would be in the real world. I mean, it's not like I can fight Death Eaters with roses." October replied quietly, absently tracing patterns on the wooden table with her index finger. So, obviously Severus wasn't reading her mind. Good to know he had enough resepct for her not to go waltzing in and reading her thoughts. "Anyway, yes, my roses are doing quite well. It's not really me that makes them stay alive during winter, though. The greenhouses are enchanted to remain warm throughout the year. I can show them to you sometime, that is, if you want me to." Severus probably wasn't that interested in her roses. They weren't magical. You couldn't use them in potions. Their only really function was being pretty to look at. Several times, when she was feeling downhearted, October's roses had made her feel much better. It was good to know that something needed her, really. Everyone liked to feel needed. But other than making October feel better about herself and being pretty, a rose were a completely useless plant.

"In some very advanced, obscure potions, the petals and the thorns are vital ingredients, some of which would be very useful in fighting anyone," Severus leaned back in his chair. "I would love to see your roses, October. How many kinds do you have?"

October smiled as Severus said this. "Wonderful! Tell me whenever you have a moment, I'll be glad to show them to you." October obviously cared very much for her roses and took a lot of pride in them. It was to be expected, seeing how much time she spent in the greenhouse. October used to worry so much over whether they were taking proper care of her roses over the summer, but the house elves seemed to have some idea what they were doing. When she came back to school every year, her beloved roses wer always perfectly fine. She helped take care of the gardens at home with her mother, but the roses were almost entirely hers (even if they did grow on school grounds).
October was extremely glad Severus was showing a slight interest in her hobbies, although a doubtful part of her mind suggested he might be faking it so not to hurt her feelings. No, Severus wouldn't do that. At least, not to her. "Anyway, I have mostly climbing roses, I have all three types of those in all different colors, but there are a few types I have that grow on shrubs too..."

"How many colours do roses come in? I know red and white, but...." Severus shrugged, a bit embarassed by his lack of knowledge. He was usually the one that knew all the answers in academics, but when it came to sports, or gardening, he was hopeless. He only knew the plants that were useful for potions, but he didn't understand how to cultivate them.
Besides, he never really had much of a green thumb; he once tried to grow some clovers, but they died within the first week. Now that he thought about it, it was probably because they were exposed to so many fumes. Perhaps the Potions Rooms wasn't the best place to grow things...
