James idly poked at his food, not having had much appetite for meat since he had started trying to become an Animagus. He looked at the rest of the contents of the table, not having much hope that there would be anything left. Sure enough, almost everything was gone except some baked potatoes sitting right in front of Lily Evans. "Hey Lily, can you pass the potatoes?"

"Sure." Lily passed James the potatoes. He had been tired alot lately and wondered what was making him and the rest of the marauders so drained. "Why have you been so tired lately?"

James blinked as he attempted to put some butter onto the potato. He hadn't been expecting anything like that. "Um... you know, pranks to plan, Slytherins to harass, secret passages to find, that sort of thing." He made a feeble attempt at a winning smile but yawned instead, completely defeating the purpose.

Lily rolled her eyes. "All of the usual things you do." After four years of going to school with James she still hated what he and his friends did for fun. "Do you ever think that for just one day you could not pick on Snape?"

"Of course they're usual. And I'd bet you...." -he dug his hands into his pockets and came up with ten Galleons, two Sickles, and a bent hairpin- "all this that at least I won't pick on Sni- er, Snape, for a whole day. I can't promise anything from Sirius, though."

"OI! I resent that, you little bugger! Here, I'm in on the bet as well," he exclaimed as he pulled out a couple of Dungbombs and 2 Galleons. "But I bet I can keep from picking on Snape for two days."

"Why the hell would Evans want Dungbombs? And I bet I can keep from picking on him for four days. So THERE." James crossed his arms and smirked, confident that Sirius wouldn't go any further.

Lily laughed. "How can I resist a bent hair pin. But, if you do pick on him you have to ask out a hufflepuff first year." She smirked.

Students Welcome Back to another magnificent year! I hope you will all beware of Lord Voldemort and guard yourselves closely." Snickers were loud from the Syltherin table. Dumbledore stared at them before finishing with a hearty, "Let's eat!"

James was taken slightly aback by this, then shrugged. "'Kay, fine. Works for me." He poked a fork at the potato nonchalantly. "But what happens if I don't pick on him?" An idea seemed to occur to him. "So... how about if I don't pick on Snape for four days, you come to the next Hogsmeade trip with me?"

James raised an eyebrow but didn't pursue the topic at the moment, choosing instead to get a piece of fried fish which had just appeared on one of the platters in front of him. "So how was your summer, Evans?"

"Fine, except my sister still won't talk to me so it was kinda boring." Lily replied. She was relieved that James wasn't going to keep asking her out. "How was yours." She was surprised that her and James were getting along.

James shrugged, glad Lily wasn't going to get mad at him for asking her out again. "Sirius and I spent most of the summer playing Quidditch. Remus and Peter came over a lot... not much besides that, really. It was fun though."

"That's fun." Lily replied. "I had a pretty boring summer. Could you pass the chicken?" She asked pointing to a platter of chicken next to James.
