"That's what usually happens." Said October, smiling and ruffling the boy's hair affectionately, as one would do to a sibling or a friend, "Optimism suits you, Blaze."

"Well, don't get used to it," he grinned blushing again, "I'm not usually optimistic. What I mean is," he tried again, "well never mind."

"Still, looking on the bright side of things is refreshing once in a while, isn't it?" October smiled warmly in return, "It may make you seem like a fool sometimes, but to live in a world of perfect darkness is to not really live at all."

He wondered if she ment that his world was full of darkness and frowned in confusion, "I guess it could be, though there wouldn't really be a point if your world was full of light."

"Exactly. That is why one should have a little of bot in their life." October replied, nodding sagely.

"Why can't one have just all light then?" the boy wondered aloud.

"Because, the world is not all made of light. The world has shadows of its own and we need to recognize them instead of pretending they will all go away if we pretend they aren't there. If a person were all made of light, they would just be foolish."

"But I thought you just said light was a good thing?" he remarked going into a sitting position on the floor.

"Blaze, light is a good thing, but there can be too much of a good thing." October replied, dropping to a sitting position herself.

"I don't get it," he shook his head really trying, "how can there be too much of a good thing?"

October sighed, "It's not hard to understand. You know how too much candy will rot your teeth out? Candy is a good thing, isn't it? A person is quite happy to receive candy, usually. It's the same thing."

"Oh ok," Blaze began to understand, "so you want to be more dark than light, because light is as bad as dark at times. Though at times when you're light you should be dark and times when you are dark you should be light." He contemplated what he just said making sure it made sense, to him at least, "am I light or dark?"

"You're both, Blaze. We all are, and, anyway, we want to stay balance between the two, because too much dark can be even more poisonous than too much light." October replied, glad he was starting to get it.

"Ok so I want to be more light," he thought a moment, "wait, does light mean I should be nice to people?"

"No, Blaze." October replied, "It means you should look on the bright side a bit more often than you do. No situation is completely hopeless."
