It was Sunday and honestly, October had absolutely nothing to do. She had tried looking for Severus, but he was nowhere to be found. She had completed all her homework. The only thing left to do was aimlessly wander around in search of something to occupy herself.
Today also happened to be the first day of the month of October. Anyone who knew October also knew that she had been born on the first day of the month she was named after. So, yes, today was her birthday. That would make her fifteen years old. Mimi had given her that lovely quill a day or so ago, adding later that it was also a birthday gift as well as a 'please-be-my-friend-again' gift. Her mother, scatterbrained as she was, had probably not realized what day today was yet and hence, nothing from her. Septimus hardly cared about the family, so October would be surprised to receive something from him other than a Howler.
The Slytherin fourth year sat down on the steps between the third and fourth floor, exhaling a sigh. Usually, Hogwarts was much more interesting than this. Why was everything so quiet today? Not that she did not enjoy the quiet, October had never been a fan of loud noises, it just seemed so unnatural for the school.

Walking down the corridor in a sort of trance, Blaze suddenly stopped and looked around. Third floor? he thought wondering if he was correct in his assumption. Wonder how I got here? Looking down at his watch he added, Oh great, and started jogging down the hallway. I'm late for class again, it seemed that he didn't only lose his bearings he seemed to have forgotten that it was Sunday. When he got to the stairs, Blaze started running up them giving only a fleeting glance at the girl sitting on them. It took him until he was halfway up the flight to realize it was October. Now, trodding backwards down the stairs (and hoping he wasn't going to fall and break something) Blaze retraced his steps to the girl sitting there all alone. "Good day to you Toby," he greeted her smiling when he finally got back to where she was.

October looked up as Blaze addressed her. She had barely paid him any attention as he rushed past her up the steps. The fourth year gazed at him, looking bored and somewhat sleepy. "Hello, Blaze." She replied, not bothering to comment on how she would like it much better if he would address her by her full name. October was rather out of it at the moment. Perhaps it was the sleepy, relaxed feel of the usually bustling castle. Perhaps it was the warm, mid morning light spilling through the windows and forming silvery white puddles on the floor. Perhaps it was just the fact that she had woken up only a few hours ago and was usually generally useless until around mid-day. She didn't know. "How are you this morning?"

"Wonderful now," he commented forgetting about his trying to make it to the class that he really didn't have now on time. There were more important things right? "And how might you be today?" he asked smiling. "It really is a nice day. Just peachy." Wow, Blaze thought slightly startled, Did I just say that? For some reason, the boy was in a terribably good mood today, though it could possibably just be from him just waking up from his lovely daydream.

October half-smiled and nodded. "Yes. It is quite a lovely morning. If we're lucky, it will stay lovely." She replied, remembering the occasion when she and Severus were caught in a very unexpected storm. It had been very odd, considering that the morning had been very clear when they had gone out. Not a cloud in the sky, if she remembered correctly. Still, this day promised to stay nice. It had remained completely clear so far. "Anyway, as for me, I have been rather bored. I've done everything that needs doing and we don't have classes today, so..." She let the sentence hang in the air, unfinished.

"What?" Blaze asked suddenly slightly confused. "No classes? but.." his voice trailed off and he rubbed the back of his head a bit foolishly. "Yeah I knew that," he grinned finally remembering. "Well," Blaze thought aloud, "you shouldn't be bored. What do you want to do?" he asked suddenly. If he didn't have classes today, then he didn't have anything to do. Besides, he wasn't like he was actually going to work on something when he didn't have to.

"It's Sunday." October replied simply to Blaze's confusion over the fact that they had no classes. A smile touched her pale lips. Blaze's absent-mindedness was endearing in an odd sort of way. How could one simply forget it was the weekend? Blaze found some way to do it, apparently. "We don't start classes again until tomorrow. Anyway, as for what I want to do, I have no idea. Right now, I'm just wondering whether or not my mother has remembered what day today is yet."
October's mother, Winter Cricket, was eccentric, somewhat enigmatic, often downright unlucky, and notoriously forgetful (August took after her most, obviously). Still, she was a caring and loving mother. October's mother often showed up at the train station hours early to greet her children at the end of every year and always had time to speak with them or give them advice. She would never forget her child's birthday on purpose.

"Sunday, oh right," Blaze laughed. "I knew that all along," he lied grinning. "I was just testing you is all." A little more seriously, the boy decided to put his brain to work. What is today? he asked himself trying to figure out what October's mother was supposed to remember. Let's see, if today is Sunday that means two days ago was Friday, right? Okay, Friday was September 29, which makes today...wait? how many days are in September? he tried to remember. 31? No 30, October has 31. Okay, so 29 plus two would make it the 31st but there aren't 31 days in September. So, "Today is October 1st," he said proudly at his accomplishment. Wait, wait, why does that day ring a bell? he glared at himself inwardly. It seemed that he had remembered it for a special reason and just couldn't put his fingure on it at the moment. "October..." Blaze was going to ask what was so special about October 1st when he suddenly realized it, "Happy Birthday!" he recovered himself with a smile.

October grinned at him. "Right you are! I was born fifteen years ago today." She replied. "I'm flattered that you remembered." Oddly, she did not recall telling Blaze her birthday. Oh well. August or someone else probably told him. It was no cause for alarm. Information such as that was something easily obtained in the school. Just by asking around, one could learn everything there was to know about a single person. Who they liked, who they didn't like. Even what they ate for breakfast Tuesday last week. It was unnerving to think about it, so October usually tried not to.

"So, is there anything special you would like to do?" the boy smiled at her warmly. "It's only your birthday once a year, and you should do something fun. At least more fun than just sitting around here on a beautiful day being bored." Blaze added as an after thought. Since he had nothing else better to do, he minus well make sure October had a wonderful day. Even though, he didn't know how she couldn't have a wonderful day now that he was there. Yes, Blaze sighed,I make everything better.

October smiled warmly at her fellow Slytherin. "That's nice of you, Blaze, but there is really nothing to do here right now. It's not a Hogsmeade weekend, there are no Quidditch games (although I don't really like Quidditch much anyway), and I've done everything that needs doing. There is absolutely nothing to do..." October sighed, shrugging lightly. There truly had been nothing to do this weekend. Blaze was right when he said birthdays came only once a year and should be special, but this day was not very special in the least. "However, if you have any ideas on your end, I'm open for discussion."

Severus halted when he heard Blaze's and October's voices echoing down the hallway. He really wanted to give this to October in private, but it seemed that Blaze wasn't going to leave anytime soon. Sighing, he rounded the corner and said, "How about actually enjoying the day outside instead of being cooped up in here?"

October's head snapped up as Severus approached. "Hello, Severus! I was looking for you, earlier." She said brightly, obviously happy to see her friend. The odd thing about him was that October never seemed able to find Severus unless he wanted to be found. Or she probably just never looked it the right places. Either one could be it. The fourth year got to her feet. "Going outside actually sounds nice. It's such a lovely day." She glanced toward a nearby open window. There was actually a significant difference between the months of October and September up here. Yesterday, it had been fairly warm and now it was very cool and crisp. A faint blush of red was beginning to tinge the leaves of the trees.

Severus felt guilty; she had been looking for him? He had been down in the dungeons making a new potion when he realized what day it was. He hadn't done the best job wrapping the present, but he was in a hurry. Severus made sure the present was still in his book bag before saying, "Shall we go? Blaze, you're welcome to join us." Severus silently hoped he had something else to do.

Frowning, Blaze tried not to glare at Severus as he came up to them. "Actually," Blaze's tried not to make his voice cold either when he was offered the chance to join them, "I would love to go." Now and even in years to come, the boy would never admit that he was the slightest bit jealous of Severus. Didn't he have everthing the the world he wanted? Still it was his idea to find Tober and he was going to spend the day with her, weather the other Slytherin liked it or not.
